ADOPTION POLICY

  • All dogs at Castaways Rescue receive distemper/parvo/lepto vaccinations through the rescue, rabies through the county, are microchipped, dewormed, and kept on flea/heartworm prevention until adopted. All dogs over 6 months will receive a heart worm/lyme test.

  • All dogs are spayed and neutered between 8-12 weeks. If you choose a foster to adopt program, you will be responsible for transporting the dog to a spay and neuter clinic at the discretion of the rescue.

    • Any failure to make the prearranged spay/neuter appointment will result in the rescue pulling the dog or the adopter covering the cost of the re-scheduled appointment.

  • Must consent to a home inspection.

  • Must be 21 years of age to sign an adoption contract.

  • Must provide proof of pet agreement if leasing or renting.

  • We will not adopt to individuals seeking an emotional support animal (ESA) to by-pass their housing property restrictions.

  • Must provide a veterinarian point of contact, no exceptions.

  • We do not have the resources to facilitate out-of-state adoptions at this time.

Adoption Process

  • Castaways Crew Members are VOLUNTEERS with full or part-time employment. For any type of correspondence with the rescue, please allow up to 48 hours before re-contacting us.

  • Castaways will process applications in the order they are received, however we do not operate on an automatic “first-come, first-served” basis.

  • The most suitable applicant for the dog will be chosen once references are checked and a virtual/physical housing inspection is complete.

  • Once your house inspection is complete, we will schedule a meet and greet. At this point, it is up to the adopter and a Castaways Representative to proceed and initiate a mandatory 10- day adoption trial.

  • A refundable deposit in the amount of $350 is required to start the adoption trial.

  • Once a trial has ended favorably, the deposit will be retained as the adoption fee, and the adopter will sign an adoption contract. Castaways will then release all medical records pertaining to the dog.

Adoption Fees

  • All adopt fees are $350; this is not negotiable.

  • Should an adopter no longer be able to care for their adopted dog, per the contract, they are to return the dog to Castaways Rescue.

  • Once an adoption has been signed, an adopter is not entitled to a refund. We hope this encourages potential applicants to take adoption more seriously.

  • Should a foster no longer be able to house their foster dog, the foster will give Castaways a week to make other arrangements to house the dog.

  • “FOSTER-TO-ADOPT” PROGRAM: If you are interested in fostering to adopt, please fill out an adoption application form instead, and indicate so by checking the “foster to adopt box.”

OWNER SURRENDER POLICY

Please make every effort to keep your dog before contacting your local animal shelter or Castaways Rescue. Your dog loves you unconditionally and deserves the same from you!

  • Our primary purpose is to rescue dogs who are at risk of euthanasia and these dogs are our priority.

  • We do not accept most owner surrenders due to capacity issues, so please contact your local shelter prior to contacting us.

  • On a case-by-case basis, we may choose to accept an owner surrender, but this is rare.

  • In the event that we do accept an owner surrender, there is a $100 owner surrender fee.
